Press Release

FREDERICTON – The following statement was issued by Seniors Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for women and gender equity, in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month:
As spring returns, bringing longer days, new growth and a sense of renewal, we are reminded of the strength it takes to begin again. That sense of renewal carries into May as New Brunswick observes Sexual Violence Awareness Month and, for the first time, the last Friday in May as Teal Day – a time to honour the resilience and courage of survivors, the power of speaking out, and the collective work of building safer, more compassionate and inclusive communities.
It is during this month that we reaffirm our commitment to prevention, support and action. By fostering a culture of consent and respectful relationships, and through continued investment in programs and services dedicated to ending gender-based violence, we are building safer, more equitable communities across the province. The theme for this year’s Sexual Violence Awareness Month, Support Is Not a Single Door, highlights the role of collaboration and community engagement in ensuring that individuals can access safe, timely and trauma-informed support when they need it without fear or judgment.
In New Brunswick, this commitment is reflected in the 2026-27 provincial budget, which includes an additional $1.6 million for the Office of Women and Gender Equity towards gender-based violence. The budget allocates $1 million to support Indigenous-led outreach and services in First Nation transition houses, advancing Weaving Our Voices Together, and $675,000 to strengthen front-line organizations responding to growing demand.
While funding alone cannot end sexual violence, it is a critical part of a broader, sustained effort to ensure survivors are believed, supported and safe. Our government remains committed to working alongside community partners, Indigenous leaders and advocates to advance gender equity and prevent violence in all its forms.
