2026 Economic Update Supports the Role of Friendship Centres in Urban Indigenous Communities

Press Release

Toronto, ON —— The Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC) recognizes the importance of the federal government’s 2026 Spring Economic Update, which includes a national investment of $168 million over five years in Urban Programming for Indigenous Peoples (UPIP).

“We see this renewed commitment as recognition that Friendship Centres must have stable and sufficient funding to maintain and build on their growing success,” says Sean Longboat, Chief Executive Officer of the OFIFC. “Friendship Centres are essential to the wellbeing and long-term success of urban Indigenous people. Smart fiscal responsibility and meaningful reconciliation both require investing in Friendship Centres, and we’re encouraged that the federal government recognizes this.”

Ontario is home to the largest urban Indigenous population in Canada, with 88 percent of Indigenous people in the province now living in cities, towns, and rural areas. Ontario Friendship Centres have grown into significant multiservice organizations, employing more than 930 frontline staff and delivering 25 complex, culturally grounded programs across 31 communities, including education, employment training, health, healing, and more.

Looking ahead, the OFIFC remains committed to working collaboratively with the federal government to advance the shared goals reflected in the Spring Economic Update. Friendship Centres are well positioned to bridge systems, strengthen community wellbeing, and deliver community driven solutions across housing, mental health, education, employment, and environmental stewardship.

“With continued inclusion and investment, Friendship Centres can play an even greater role in shaping a brighter future for urban Indigenous communities across Ontario,” says Longboat.
