Makivvik Honours the Service of Her Excellency Mary Simon

Press Release

Nunavik, Québec, May 7, 2026 – Makivvik proudly celebrates the conclusion of nearly five years
of historic and distinguished service by Her Excellency Mary Simon as Governor General of
Canada.

As the first Inuk to hold this office, Mary Simon’s tenure has been both significant and
consequential. Drawing on the strength, wisdom and values rooted in her upbringing in
Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, she carried out her responsibilities with dignity and a clear sense of
purpose.

Throughout her time in office, she advanced dialogue on reconciliation, diversity and inclusion,
mental health, and the environment. She consistently ensured that Inuit perspectives were
present within national conversations and on the international stage, while reinforcing the place
of Inuit within Canada’s institutions.

Her time in office was defined by a deliberate and sustained effort to elevate Inuit voices. At
significant national commemorations and global engagements, she served as a representative of
both Canada and Inuit, bringing meaningful visibility to our contributions, perspectives, and lived
realities. Her leadership has been a profound source of pride for Inuit communities and a lasting
inspiration for future generations. Canada, and the international community, are stronger for her
integrity and her unwavering commitment to advancing dignity, equity, and understanding for all.
Her impact has been lasting. For Inuit across the country, and particularly for Inuit youth, her
presence in this role has affirmed that Inuit belong in all spaces of leadership and influence.

Pita Aatami stated:
“Mary Simon has shown Inuit youth that there are no limits to where they belong. Throughout her
mandate, she showcased Inuit culture, uplifted Inuit talent, and shared her platform so others
could be seen and heard. She stood present at historic moments, carrying Inuit with her into those
spaces. As her mandate comes to a close, we thank her for contributing to opening doors that will
never close again.”

Makivvik expresses its sincere appreciation to Mary Simon for her dedication to Inuit and to
Canada. Her tenure will remain an important chapter in the history of Inuit representation and
leadership.

Nakurmiik to one of our own, Mary Simon.
