Protective Support Worker

SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 92,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW:

The Protective Support Worker provides direct support to individuals who are acutely intoxicated and require short-term stabilization in a safe, respectful, and culturally grounded environment.

Positions Available: 15 (Full-Time, Permanent)
Compensation: $25–$28/hour
Schedule: 8-hour rotating days/evenings/nights (24/7 environment)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor client safety and well-being
  • Provide basic care (hydration, rest, hygiene support)
  • Respond to crisis situations using de-escalation techniques
  • Support harm reduction approaches
  • Complete documentation and incident reporting
  • Work collaboratively with team members and partners

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in shelter, harm reduction, or community support settings
  • Strong communication and crisis response skills
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally safe care
  • Relevant education or equivalent experience
  • Certifications: First Aid & CPR (Level C) required; Naloxone/Narcan competency required; Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred; ASIST and/or Suicide Risk Assessment training considered strong assets

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
