June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, and the Town of Aurora will be joining communities across Canada in providing the opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. It’s a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact an evolving Canada.

Walking Through the Fire – Film Screening and Q&A
Tuesday, June 9 – Aurora Town Square (Davide De Simone Performance Hall)
Experience the power of Walking Through the Fire: Visual Album, a breathtaking film that unites First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists from across Turtle Island with award‑winning group Sultans of String. This vibrant blend of interviews and music videos showcases the beauty and diversity of Indigenous music – from Métis fiddling and East Coast rhythms to Pacific Northwest drumming and Inuit throat singing. Featuring Dr. Duke Redbird, the Métis Fiddler Quartet, Shannon Thunderbird, Northern Cree, Leela Gilday, and more, this 82‑minute journey celebrates collaboration, culture, and the unifying force of music. Following this screening, there will be a Q&A with director Chris McKhool and artist Shannon Thunderbird.
Indigenous Storytelling & Live Music
Saturday, June 20 – Aurora Town Park
Celebrate the rich cultural diversity and living traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples at this special community gathering in Aurora’s Town Park. Join us for a morning of storytelling, music and connection, as we honour Indigenous voices and experiences. Bring your curiosity, your family, and your sense of community. This event is open to all and designed to foster understanding, celebration and connection.
9 a.m. – Featured Storytelling with Anishinaabe Grandmother Kim Wheatley
Immerse yourself in the power of oral tradition as Grandmother Kim Wheatley, an Anishinaabe Knowledge Keeper, shares stories that illuminate culture, identity, and the enduring strength of Indigenous communities.
11 a.m. – Live Concert: Dave Mowat & Trio
Enjoy a live performance by Dave Mowat & Trio, whose music blends tradition, artistry and contemporary expression. Their sound brings heart, rhythm and spirit to the park – a perfect complement to the storytelling experience.
