Language, traditional teachings and community leadership are essential tools for creating stronger futures

SASKATOON — Syd Fiddler, speaking during the Reconciliation flag-raising ceremony last Friday, at Civic Square, recalled the painful legacy caused by Canada’s residential school system, but highlighted the resilience of Indigenous Peoples during one of the most difficult parts of the country’s history.

Fiddler led several speakers at the gathering that marked the beginning of National Indigenous History Month, the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6 and the 10th year of Reconciliation Saskatoon. The speeches centred on healing, cultural revitalization and reconciliation.
