Statement from Premier Dixon on the passing of Margaret Commodore

Press Release

June 2, 2026

Premier Currie Dixon has issued the following statement:

“It is with sadness that I join Yukoners in mourning the passing of Margaret Commodore, whose dedication and leadership helped shape the Yukon and opened doors for generations of Indigenous women in public service.

“Margaret served in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1996, representing Whitehorse North Centre and later Whitehorse Centre. In 1985, Margaret became one of two First Nations people appointed to the Yukon’s Cabinet as well as the first First Nations woman to serve as a Minister in a Canadian legislature. During her time in public office, she served in several Cabinet roles, including Minister of Health and Human Resources, Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate and the Minister of Justice.

“Margaret’s public service was grounded in courage, advocacy and a deep commitment to community. She helped build and support organizations that continue to serve Yukoners today. These include Kaushee’s Place, the Yukon Association of Non-Status Indians and the Yukon Native Hockey Association.

“As a member of the Stó:lō Nation and a residential school Survivor, Margaret brought strength, lived experience and determination to her work. Her legacy is one of leadership, service and lasting impact.

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend my sincere condolences to Margaret’s family, friends, former colleagues and all those who knew and loved her. Her contributions to the Yukon will not be forgotten.

“Flags at the Jim Smith Building and Taylor House will be flown at half-mast until sunset on June 3 to honour Margaret.”
