National Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations in Nanaimo drew visitors from across the region Saturday, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who toured the Nanaimo Museum alongside members of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
During the visit, Snuneymuxw Elder Bill White and Councilor Erralyn Joseph shared stories of their Nation’s history, culture and connection to the territory, offering the Prime Minister a deeper understanding of the region’s Indigenous heritage.
Carney was given a wool nobility blanket, traditionally made by the Snuneymuxw First Nation for high-ranking leaders, and a headpiece made of cedar.
