Press Release
Today, our government congratulates the Manitoba Métis Federation on their Red River Métis Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Treaty reaching second reading in the House of Commons.
As Métis Nation–Saskatchewan works to finalize our self-governance agreement for the Métis citizens of this province, our strength comes from knowing who we are. Our ancestors have lived on the lands now known as Saskatchewan for generations. In 2024, we joined Cumberland House as the community celebrated 250 years since it was established in 1774. This summer we will join Île-à-la-Crosse in celebrating 250 years to honour Métis families in the area as far back as 1776, highlighting our distinct Métis identity, jurisdiction and footprint on this land.
Métis culture is rooted in the values of kinship, ma paraantii, and working together. We celebrate and recognize this important milestone for the Manitoba Métis Federation on their journey towards self-government. Métis peoples in all jurisdictions have a right to self-governance and self-determination.
