A Tribe Called Red ready to celebrate First Nations culture at Talking Stick Festival

Earlier this month two members of the U.S. Congress stole a few rays of the blinding klieg light that is the Super Bowl by saying they were going to send letters urging NFL Commissioner Roger Godell to take a stand against the Washington Redskins ownership and have them change the team name. They contended the word “Redskins” is, in fact, a slur.
For the three guys from A Tribe Called Red – Ian “DJ NDN” Campeau, Dan DJ Shub General and Bear Witness – this must have elicited some knowing headshakes. Campeau had just spearheaded a successful campaign to have the Nepean Redskins minor league football club from their Ottawa hometown find something else to call themselves. The Nits, maybe? They’re now the Nepean Eagles. Now, was that so hard? Of course the name of a football team is pretty small potatoes compared to the myriad problems facing First Nations people in this country from water quality and general living conditions to substance abuse issues and hopelessness among the young, but hey, it’s a start.
