The Minister of Indigenous Relations, Richard Feehan, issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling in Daniels v Canada.“We respect the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision and are reviewing it closely.
“We are very proud of our work with the Metis and First Nations people of Alberta. The Supreme Court’s decision does not change our commitment to building strong, collaborative relationships.
“We are also committed to implementing the objectives and principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
“Alberta is the only province in Canada with a recognized Metis land base. Earlier this month, we announced a new Metis Settlements consultation policy, providing a consistent process and an opportunity for meaningful input. We are now working with the Metis Nation of Alberta Association to develop a non-Settlement Metis consultation policy.
“I have already reached out to Audrey Poitras, President of the Metis Nation of Alberta Association, and Randy Hardy, President of the Metis Settlements General Council. We will continue to engage with them on the implications of this decision.”
