AMC Acknowledges Manitoba Museum’s Commitment to Repatriation and Reconciliation

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) recognizes and appreciates the Manitoba Museum’s public apology and the ongoing work being done to return Indigenous ancestral remains to their rightful communities. The “Homeward Journey” initiative reflects an important and respectful shift toward reconciliation, and the AMC acknowledges the dedication of all those involved in this healing work.

“We commend the Manitoba Museum for taking responsibility and for committing to the careful and culturally appropriate return of our ancestors,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “It is not easy to confront difficult truths, and the Museum’s willingness to do so with humility and respect deserves acknowledgment.”

Since 2022, the Manitoba Museum has worked with Indigenous communities through the “Homeward Journey” project, building relationships and opening pathways to ensure repatriation is guided by the wishes and cultural protocols of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

“This is about restoring dignity, healing relationships, and affirming First Nations sovereignty in how our ancestors are cared for,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “We are heartened by the collaborative spirit shown so far and encourage continued partnership, transparency, and leadership from all institutions with similar collections.”

The AMC looks forward to supporting this important work alongside the Manitoba Museum, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community representatives. Through trust, open dialogue, and shared responsibility, we can ensure these ancestors are returned with the honour they deserve.

“We see this as a meaningful step on the journey of truth and reconciliation,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “Together, we can set a powerful example of what it means to move forward with respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to righting historical wrongs.”
