Press Release
Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB (March 13, 2026) – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is raising serious concerns after a respected First Nations Elder says she was harassed and ordered to leave a Winnipeg Walmart by private security without explanation.
Elder Mary Laquette, who lives in Winnipeg, says the incident occurred at the Walmart on Ellice Avenue, where she regularly shops. Laquette relies on a walker for mobility and said she had every intention of paying for her items.
“I didn’t even have it in my mind to steal at all. I like going there,” said Elder Laquette. “They grabbed my stuff from my bag. I had money to pay for what I took there. They swore at me and gave me the finger. I kept yelling, ‘Leave me alone. I’m not doing anything.’ And they didn’t even listen.”
Laquette says the situation was especially upsetting because of her mobility challenges.
“You know I use a walker. How can I run away when I’m using a walker, I’m disabled,” she said.
Acting Chief Brad Beardy of Lake St. Martin First Nation said the incident raises serious concerns about the conduct and training of private security staff in large retail stores.
“This is extremely disappointing,” said Acting Chief Beardy. “An Elder in our community should never be treated this way. Walmart and the private security firms they hire have a responsibility to ensure people are treated with dignity and respect. What happened here raises serious questions about how these security teams are being trained and supervised.”
AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson said the incident is part of a troubling pattern that must be addressed.
“Our Elders deserve dignity and respect,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “First Nations people should not be subjected to humiliation, suspicion, or mistreatment just for entering a store. Training is one part of the answer, but accountability matters just as much. Retailers cannot outsource responsibility for how our people are treated. If these incidents continue, those companies must be held accountable.”
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is calling on Walmart and the private security company involved for a full apology to Laquette, and review the incident and ensure stronger training and oversight moving forward.
