As questions swirl around transparency, risk and cultural obligations, a judge must now decide whether lawyers representing 21 First Nations deserve their controversial $510M payday
The words “mega fund,” “windfall” and “sweetheart deal” were thrown around a Superior Court on Oct. 3, as a judge heard arguments for and against the $510 million in legal fees charged by the team responsible for the $10 billion Robinson Huron Treaty settlement.
The two nations objecting to the fee amount, represented by Gimaa Craig Nootchtai (Atikameksheng Anishnawbek’s chief) and O’Gimaa-Kwe Karen Bell (Garden River First Nation’s chief) filed a court challenge against the lawyers who represented the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund (RHTLF), Nahwegahbow Corbiere Genoodmagejig.
