Annual FHQTC Science Fair a Growing Success

Press Release

Apr 12, 2016

(Regina) The Annual FHQTC Science Fair went into it’s second year with a bang. Students in our FHQ communities ranging from grades 3 – 9, came together at the Queensbury Centre in Regina to display their science experiments, tests, and studies. From rockets and star knowledge, to the nutritional value of buffalo vs beef, the 35 booths covered a vast area in the field of science.

This year’s theme was “Incorporating Science into Traditional Knowledge”. Each student was asked to describe how their display bridged traditional knowledge and modern science. “The reason we came up with that motto is because we say indigenous knowledge came first and science came second. We wanted our kids to look upon that and somehow, during that process, develop a stronger sense of identity and connection to the earth and their communities.” Said Lori Poitras, Director of Education.

The keynote speaker was Muscowpetung’s Adrian Duke, co-founder of Skyturtle Technologies Inc., an innovative waterslide design firm that has designed record-breaking waterslides all over the world. Adrian shared the importance of science & mathematics in the work that he does, and how important it is to never give up on your dreams. Adrian is currently building the world’s fastest waterslide in Las Vegas.

Prizes were awarded for each grade, and were judged on various criteria, including how well the display was presented, and the integration of language and culture. The category for Aboriginal Content included the most clear use of culture, language and how integrated the science was into our traditional understandings. Montana Bellegarde and Evynn Cyr, grade 5 at Peepeekisis school, were awarded the Aboriginal Content Award for their thorough presentation on buffalo; it’s uses, spiritual understandings, and the nutritional value of buffalo vs. beef.
