Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB (May 6, 2026) – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) extends its appreciation to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon as she concludes her tenure as Canada’s 30th Governor General.
Mary Simon’s appointment in 2021 as the first Inuk — and the first Indigenous person — to serve as Governor General marked a defining moment in Canada’s history. For many First Nations peoples, her presence in the office carried meaning beyond ceremony. At a time when this country was being called to confront the truths of residential schools and the enduring impacts of colonialism, Governor General Simon brought lived experience, moral clarity, and a steady voice to conversations many institutions had too long avoided.
Throughout her mandate, Governor General Simon approached her role with humility and purpose. She consistently emphasized the importance of Indigenous languages, the wellbeing of Indigenous youth and families, and the responsibility of all Canadians to understand the true history of this land. Her leadership reflected the principle that reconciliation must be grounded not only in words, but in action, honesty, and accountability.
“Governor General Mary Simon carried this office with strength, humility, and integrity,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “She understood that reconciliation is not symbolic work — it is about truth, respect, and rebuilding relationships with First Nations based on recognition of our rights, our histories, and our place in this country. Her leadership brought humanity to an institution that for many of our people has long represented exclusion. She leaves behind an example of leadership rooted in service, dignity, and courage.”
AMC recognizes Governor General Simon’s lifelong commitment to public service and to advancing the voices of Indigenous peoples across Canada. Her tenure will remain an important part of the ongoing journey toward renewed Crown–First Nations relations built on mutual respect and the honouring of Treaties.
AMC also extends congratulations to Louise Arbour on her appointment as Canada’s next Governor General and looks forward to continued dialogue focused on strengthening respectful Crown–First Nations relations and upholding inherent and Treaty rights.
