Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his party are in B-C today and ready to start planning for this fall’s parliamentary session.

The Liberal caucus retreat is being held in Kelowna, where M-Ps are set to develop strategy for the upcoming sitting, which will difficult issues like a controversial tax reforms and refugee claimants.

After today’s meetings, the prime minister is set to host a town hall at the University of B-C’s Okanagan campus.

Yesterday, Trudeau was in Kelowna where he met with firefighters, spoke with local media and capped the day with a hike up a mountain. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Wildfires)

Help is on the way for ranchers who lost animals and land to record-breaking wildfires that continue to sweep across the province.

The federal and provincial governments have announced 20 million dollars that farmers can use to replace lost breeding animals and re-seed damaged lands.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay says at least 30-thousand animals have been killed or displaced during a fire season that has seen more than 12-hundred wildfires burn across the province.

MacAulay made the funding announcement yesterday after a meeting with federal and provincial cabinet ministers and First Nations in Vancouver, where the parties talked about how to rebuild following the crisis and how to improve prevention and response going forward. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Alberta-Park-Evacuation)

A fire that sparked in southeastern B-C last week has prompted officials to issue a precautionary evacuation alert for a national park across the provincial boundary.

Parks Canada says there is no immediate threat to Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta, but they want to be fully prepared in case fire conditions change.

The B-C Wildfire Service says the Kenow fire was sparked by lightning and has grown to an estimated 44 square kilometres.

(YUKON-Plane-Crash)

The Yukon Coroner’s Service says a 31-year-old man has died following a plane crash northeast of Whitehorse.

The coroner’s service says Justin Kolla was killed when his plane crashed north of Faro on Saturday.

It’s believed that Kolla flying solo on his way to a hunting trip when weather forced him to change his route.

R-C-M-P, Transport Canada and the coroner’s service are all investigating. (CKRW)

(BC-Coquitlam-Crash)

Six people have been taken to hospital after a major crash (on Lougheed Highway) in Coquitlam.

The collision yesterday afternoon involved a large dump truck and several cars, and closed the highway for several hours.

Lindsay Kay with the B-C Ambulance Service says advanced care and primary care paramedics were called to the scene and six people were taken to hospital.

Few details have been released, but R-C-M-P and WorkSafe B-C are investigating. (News1130)

(BC-Golfer-Shot)

Police say a — quote — “freak accident” at a golf course on Vancouver Island could have had tragic consequences.

Constable Gary O’Brien with Nanaimo R-C-M-P says a man was playing the 16th hole of a golf course in Lantzville last week when he dropped to the ground in extreme pain.

The man’s leg started to bleed and he later went to hospital, where he learned there was a bullet lodged in his calf.

O’Brien says the golfer was likely hit by an errant shot from somebody shooting targets in the bushes. (NanaimoNewsNOW)
