Barrie marks National Indigenous History Month with events and education

(Barrie, ON) – The month of June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month, and June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Throughout the month, the City of Barrie is supporting and collaborating with community partners to provide opportunities to learn about and celebrate the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Events include:

  • Flag Raising at City Hall on Monday, June 2 at 1:15 p.m.
  • Regional Indigenous musicians and Community Fire at Meridian Place on Wednesday, June 25 starting at 3 p.m.
  • Indigenous Film Feature at Meridian Place on Wednesday, June 25 at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m. – weather permitting). In partnership with Downtown Barrie’s Lawn Chair Luminata and the Barrie Film Festival.

Programming was organized in partnership with the Barrie Native Friendship Centre, Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team from the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle, Barrie Public Library, and the Downtown Barrie Improvement Area (BIA).
