VICTORIA – Killing grizzly bears for trophy will come to an end in British Columbia, but not before hunters get one more shot this season.

The provincial government announced yesterday that trophy killing of grizzlies across the province, and all hunting of the species within the Great Bear Rainforest, will be banned as of November 30th.

The ban comes in at the end of the current hunting season that kicks off in some areas of the province today — a delay the Natural Resource Operations Minister says is the result of permits being issued under the previous Liberal government.

Doug Donaldson says First Nations and other groups will be consulted before the ban takes effect to determine what regulations are needed to enforce the rule and how to mitigate any economic impacts.

While Donaldson says the move means the N-D-P are upholding their campaign promise, the non-profit Grizzly Bear Foundation says allowing this season to go ahead is a failure.

The foundation is recommending all hunting of grizzlies to be banned — including for the purpose of meat, which is exempt from the ban — and support the development of wildlife-watching tourism industries.
