Alberta Premier Alison Redford and Transportation Minister Ric McIver welcomed news of a historic tentative agreement on the Calgary Ring Road, a key part of the Redford Government’s Building Alberta Plan.

“The ring road will bring tremendous benefits for the safety, prosperity and success of Calgarians, the Tsuu T’ina people, and all Albertans because it will so dramatically improve traffic flows in, through and around Calgary and the surrounding region. And at the end of the day, it will improve our quality of life, allowing us to spend less time stuck in traffic, and more time with our loved ones.”

–  Alison Redford, Premier

“Everyone has come together as neighbours, as friends and as partners. I extend my personal thank you to Chief Whitney and all members of the Tsuu T’ina First Nation. Both parties worked hard and in good faith throughout this round of negotiations. We believe we have a fair deal for the Nation, for Calgary’s residents and for Alberta’s taxpayers.”

– Ric McIver, Alberta Transportation Minister

The Tentative Agreement

The Tsuu T’ina First Nation voted in favour of a deal that will see them swap reserve land for Crown land and financial compensation in order to facilitate the construction of southwest portion of Calgary’s ring road.

The agreement will result in the  the Tsuu T’ina First Nation selling 428.2 hectares (1,058 acres) of its land to the Government of Alberta for:

  • the transfer of 2,030.8 hectares (5,018.1 acres) of Crown land to the Tsuu T’ina Nation
  • $340.7 million ($275 million for the land plus $65.7 million to cover impacts on the reserve)
  • approval for the Tsuu T’ina to purchase an additional 129.5 hectares (320 acres) of Crown land from the Government of Alberta for $1.6 million

Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
