Celebrate National Indigenous History Month

Press Release

May. 30th, 2023

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time earmarked by the Canadian government to learn more about Indigenous history, cultures and perspectives. At KAIROS we encourage year long learning – including the impacts of colonization in Canada – in parallel with active efforts to decolonize and work towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

What began as “National Aboriginal History Month” in 2009, became “National Indigenous History Month” in 2017.

We encourage you to visit Indigenous-led organizations to learn more about the history, world views and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and participate in events near you.

A few Indigenous organizations to consider visiting:

Assembly of First Nations

Indigenous Climate Action

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami

Métis National Council

National Association of Friendship Centres

National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

Native Women’s Association of Canada

Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada
