Celebrating Indigenous Trailblazers

September 24th, 2013

Tomorrow, September 25, the University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Aboriginal Students Association (UMASA) will host a special celebration and Traditional Feast at Migizii Agamik – Bald Eagle Lodge.

As part of Homecoming 2013 celebrations, everyone is welcome to join us for a full day of events where we will celebrate the University of Manitoba’s Indigenous alumni and connect with the Indigenous community on campus.

The lunchtime event, Celebrating Indigenous Trailblazers, will celebrate leaders that have played an integral role in shaping the Indigenous community at the University of Manitoba, and in forwarding the development of the entire university.  The celebration will include welcoming remarks from Deborah Young, Executive Lead for Indigenous Achievement, and features special guest alumni Ovide Mercredi, 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Edwin Jebb, Chancellor of University College of the North and Rod Bruinooge, MP for Winnipeg South. There will also be a special acknowledgment for Elijah Harper, with members of Mr. Harper’s family in attendance.

Included as part of the celebration of Indigenous Achievement is a session of “speed networking,” where current Indigenous students can meet Indigenous alumni, business leaders, and U of M faculty and staff, within a set amount of time, and get the opportunity to see what others are doing in their professions and communities. At last year’s inaugural Indigenous Achievement speed networking event, several connections were made that led to beneficial opportunities for the participants, and the event was brought back this year by popular demand. The speed networking is fast paced, energetic and of great advantage to both students looking to get an insight into career choices, and to Indigenous alumni already established in their fields.

Schedule:
9:00 a.m. Speed Networking (preregistration required)
11:30 a.m. Homecoming 2013: Celebrating Indigenous Trailblazers
12:30 p.m. Traditional Feast

All events will take place in Migizii Agamik – Bald Eagle Lodge, 114 Sidney Smith St. at the Fort Garry Campus
