Press Release
(June 12, 2026 – Toronto, Ont.) On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict extends a warm welcome to the athletes, supporters, and visitors arriving for the FIFA World Cup 2026:
“This global event brings people together through sport, celebration, and shared respect. As guests gather on the traditional territories of First Nations across the region, we recognize these lands as places of long-standing gathering and connection among many peoples. We encourage visitors to enjoy the tournament and take the opportunity to learn more about the First Nations whose territories they are visiting.
We also share the following teachings on the origins of the place names that many will hear throughout their visit. The name “Canada” originates from the Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk) word Kaná:ta, which means “town” or “village.”
“Ontario” comes from Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk) word Oniatari:io (or Kanadario), meaning “beautiful lake” or “sparkling water.”
The name “Toronto” is derived from the Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk) word “Tkaronto” meaning “where there are trees standing in the water.”
We hope this moment of international celebration builds meaningful connections and lasting memories for all involved.”
The Chiefs of Ontario wish all participants a safe and successful FIFA World Cup 2026.
