Connect with Our Roots event kicks off National Indigenous History Month

Press Release

Today, the City of Edmonton welcomed community members to kihcihkaw askî to mark the beginning of National Indigenous History Month.

Connect with Our Roots, hosted by the Indigenous Relations Office and the Root for Trees program, brought together residents, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community partners to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous people in Edmonton. The event featured a community tree planting, Indigenous-led entertainment and knowledge sharing sessions. The activities were designed to help residents explore the deep spiritual relationship between Indigenous teachings and the land while learning how traditional knowledge connects with urban nature and native plant life.

“Connect with Our Roots is a powerful way to open National Indigenous History Month by bringing people together through ceremony, planting, storytelling and shared learning,” said Krystin Flierl, Director, Indigenous Relations. “It invites Edmontonians to connect with the land, honour the histories and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and reflect on the relationships and responsibilities we carry forward together.”

“Root for Trees was honoured to invite participants to plant trees, shrubs and wildflowers indigenous to this land,” said Lindsay Vander Hoek, Program Liaison, Root for Trees. “Creating connection with the land is so important in the journey of reconciliation. When someone has the opportunity to plant a tree and touch the soil, it inspires a sense of care for that tree. That care then extends to people and place, contributing to a shared future.”

Today’s event at kihcihkaw askî, a site dedicated to Indigenous ceremonies and land-based learning, provides a vital space for residents to engage with the history of this territory and work toward a shared future of healing and mutual respect.

The City of Edmonton remains committed to fostering an environment where Indigenous knowledge is valued in urban conservation and community planning. Throughout June, residents are encouraged to continue their journey of learning by participating in various events across the city and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives.
