Niagara Region Métis Council (NRMC) President Derrick Pont received the Town of Lincoln Mayor’s Medal on May 4 for his leadership and work advancing Indigenous relations in the region.
Presented by Mayor Sandra Eason, this recognition honours individuals, businesses, and leaders who demonstrate outstanding community service, collaboration, and dedication to enhancing the town’s quality of life.
Derrick has dedicated 18 years to the NRMC since joining in 2008 and is now in his fourth term as president. In the community, Derrick is known for his contribution to shaping and inspiring young learners. Over the past decade, Derrick has been committed to sharing Métis ways of life, history, and heritage with students. He also spent 15 years volunteering with Scouts Canada.
“It’s an honour to be recognized as an Indigenous leader in this community,” says Derrick. “To have a municipality acknowledge my commitment to sharing Métis culture and teachings with young learners is deeply meaningful. It reflects a growing respect for our people, our knowledge, and the importance of passing those teachings on to future generations.”
