Debbie Houle, President of Aksis, Edmonton’s Aboriginal Business and Professional Association

Release Date: Dec 4, 2013  NationTalk interviews Debbie Houle, President of Aksis, Edmonton’s Aboriginal Business and Professional Association. Debbie is Metis from the Elizabeth Metis Settlement in Northeastern Alberta.    She has worked in Edmonton’s urban Aboriginal community since 1991.   In 1997, she and four other members started the Aboriginal Women’s Vocal Ensemble ASANI.

As a part of the entertainment industry, Asani has gone on to receive a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, an Indian Summer Music Award and a nomination for a Juno Award from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.    In 2009 she received an Esquao Award for her work in the performing arts from the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women.   In 2006 she received the Mayor’s Salute to Excellence Arts and Culture Performance Award.

She currently serves as the President of Aksis, Edmonton’s Aboriginal Business and Professional Association.   She works full-time as a liaison officer with Alberta Aboriginal Affairs’ First Nation Development Fund administering a grant program to First Nations in Alberta.
