Press Release
March 5, 2026
We want to make it clear to the public, the Province, and law enforcement that compliance and enforcement activities cannot simply take place within Pictou Landing First Nation without proper collaboration and engagement with our community.
The enforcement of provincial cannabis laws on -reserve raises serious concerns and risks undermining the honour of the Crown, while disregarding the legal and historical agreements that define the relationship between the Mi’kmaq Nation and the Government of Canada.
Once again, the Province has failed to appropriately engage with the Mi’kmaq. Meaningful consultation with our Nation is not optional—it is a responsibility that must be upheld when decisions and actions impact our communities, our lands, and our people.
Pictou Landing First Nation holds inherent rights and governance that must be respected. Any enforcement actions carried out without prior dialogue, coordination, and recognition of our jurisdiction raise serious concerns for our community.
When police proceed with compliance and enforcement measures within our territory without that engagement, it risks infringing upon our rights and disregarding the nation-to-nation relationship that should exist between the Province and the Mi’kmaq.
To ensure the Province is fully aware of our concerns, this statement will also be shared directly with relevant provincial representatives so they are informed directly, rather than learning of these concerns solely through media coverage.
Our community remains open to respectful dialogue and collaboration. However, continued actions taken without meaningful engagement leave us with limited options. If this pattern continues, pursuing legal avenues may become necessary to ensure that our rights, governance, and jurisdiction are respected.
Wela’lioq,
PLFN Chief Young & Council
