Environmental Field Studies Proposed Solar Project in Meadowside

We would like to advise community members that environmental field studies will begin on Monday, May 4, 2026, on NFN’s corporate lands in the Meadowside area.

This work is being undertaken to support the assessment of lands for a proposed solar project in partnership with CarbonFree Group.

CarbonFree’s environmental consulting contractor, Hatch, will be on site to complete the first phase of field studies. This initial work will focus on early spring environmental conditions, including:

• Monitoring for amphibian emergence (e.g., spring peepers)
• Observations and documentation of wetland areas and surrounding habitat

These studies are a standard and important step in understanding site conditions and ensuring that any future development is planned responsibly.

The lands under consideration were identified based on several favourable characteristics, including:

• Strong solar resource potential
• Relatively flat terrain
• Limited environmentally sensitive or protected areas
• Excellent access and proximity to Highway 17
• Limited harvesting activity in the area
• No anticipated impacts to Little Sturgeon Road
• Continued operation and maintenance of the NFN sand quarry

Wetlands will be carefully assessed and respected throughout this process. Identifying and protecting these areas is a key focus of the environmental studies now underway.

Looking Ahead (If the Project Proceeds)
If the project advances beyond the assessment stage:

• CarbonFree, as the project developer, will undertake comprehensive environmental studies prior to construction and will avoid any areas containing protected species or environmentally sensitive features, including wetlands.
• The project will not involve hazardous waste or emissions on site.
• Construction is expected to involve limited local disturbance, with no ongoing disturbance to the community during operations.
• The project may incorporate agrivoltaics, such as the use of sheep for vegetation management.
• There is also potential to support pollinator habitats and honeybee production across the project lands.
