Monday, February 29th, 2016 – (Iqaluit, Nunavut). The City of Iqaluit is pleased that it will receive $4 million dollars from the Liberal Government to put towards the capital costs of the Aquatic Centre. This contribution is also expected to help save the City money on interest payments, thereby increasing the amount of money available for operations and maintenance for the aquatic centre. “This contribution is greatly appreciated and helpful, especially since the City is committed to returning to a balanced financial situation” said Muhamud Hassan, City CAO.
“This is very good news for the City and the community. The aquatic centre will certainly be a place where Iqalummiut of all ages can go, whether for fun, fitness or physiotherapy opportunities. Many residents have are very excited for the aquatic centre to open” said Mayor Redfern.
Deputy Mayor Romeyn Stevenson, who’d been the Chair for the Recreation Committee for many years, right from community consultations to council approval in securing funding to proceed with the project said “the City listened to its residents and the acquatic centre means that everyone will have another choice and opportunity for healthy activities that can contribute to personal health and wellbeing.”
“The City of Iqaluit and REACH will continue to fundraise for this much needed recreation infrastructure and is happy to receive any additional and much needed donations for the Aquatic Centre” said Amy Elgersma, City Director of Recreation.
Currently, the Aquatic Centre is on schedule and on budget. It is expected to open in early 2017.
