UNPFII chair says the UN’s reform and financial issues impact forum’s capacity, scheduling and session times.
The United Nations is experiencing its deepest financial difficulty in its 80 years of existence that is linked to member states not paying their dues and the requirement to repay member states for budget expenses it does not spend.
“We ended 2025 with a record $1.56 billion in outstanding dues, which is more than double that of the previous year,” UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said in a press briefing at the end of January. “We do not have the sort of cash reserves and the sort of liquidity to keep functioning as we’ve done in previous years.”
