Chiefs call on politicians ‘to respect treaty rights’
A 2026 referendum promised by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and recent comments from Trump officials about Alberta have the chiefs of several First Nations in that province raising concerns about foreign interference.
Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, the Blackfoot Confederacy, and the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation say they have “legitimate concerns that Elections Alberta is ill-equipped to deal with the potential of foreign interference in the referendum,” according to the group’s news release.
