Will work with Indigenous counterpart on social issues project
The Niagara Peninsula Aboriginal Area Management Board is looking to the non-Indigenous community for some help.
The organization is seeking non-Indigenous people in Fort Erie between the ages of 18 and 30 to work alongside Indigenous youth in its Oya:na life skills program, which also provides pre-employment skills training.
“We’ve had (the program) run out of Brantford and Hamilton,” said Aili Childs, the Oya:na program’s team lead. “This is the first time in Fort Erie.”
The purpose of the Oya:na program is to provide urban Indigenous youth with the opportunity to enhance their employability, life-skills, and ignite their passions through culturally grounded programming.
Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants in the program will be required to work together on a community service project of their choosing, Childs said, adding the project can cover issues such as poverty, homelessness or environmental issues.
