GN and NTI Release Nunavut Arctic Sovereignty and Security Strategy

Press Release

(September 12, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) The Government of Nunavut (GN) and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) today released the Nunavut Arctic Sovereignty and Security Strategy, shaped by the insights and priorities shared during the Arctic Sovereignty and Security Summit held in Iqaluit this past June.

As geopolitical interest in the Arctic intensifies and the impacts of climate change accelerate, it is crucial that Nunavut voices guide Canada’s sovereignty agenda. The summit and strategy both underscore the central role Inuit have in defining Canada’s claim to the North. The Nunavut Arctic Sovereignty and Security Strategy unifies various visions for Nunavut’s future security, and grounds that vision in the values and priorities of the people who call Nunavut home.

The strategy reflects input from Inuit leaders, territorial and federal representatives, Elders, youth and other key partners.

“As we strengthen Canada’s presence in the Arctic, Nunavut must be at the table shaping the policies that define our future,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “This strategy ensures the leadership of Nunavummiut in advancing nation-building infrastructure, energy security and transportation projects that will secure Canada’s sovereignty while unlocking opportunity for our people.”

“Inuit have always been the foundation of Canada’s presence in the Arctic. There is no Canadian sovereignty without Inuit security,” said NTI President Jeremy Tunraluk. “This strategy is clear that sovereignty in the Arctic must be guided by Inuit-led priorities.”
