Press Release
April 14, 2026
The Yukon’s eight municipalities will receive over $30 million from the Government of Yukon through the 2026 Comprehensive Municipal Grant. This is a two per cent increase from 2025 and the first time the annual grant has surpassed $30 million.
Additionally, up to $88,000 is provided annually to the Association of Yukon Communities to support professional development opportunities for staff at First Nations governments, municipalities and local advisory councils.
The grant is the Government of Yukon’s core funding for municipal governments. It helps cover the cost of essential services such as fresh drinking water, wastewater treatment, waste collection, recycling and other services required under the Municipal Act and other legislation.
The unconditional grant provides municipal governments with predictable funding, helping them to set priorities, balance budgets and reduce the burden on local taxpayers.
The Comprehensive Municipal Grant is the cornerstone of financial support for Yukon municipalities. Our government understands the importance of stable core funding that helps municipalities deliver essential local services to their residents, especially as the Yukon’s population grows.
Minister of Community Services Cory Bellmore
This year marks the second year of the enhanced Comprehensive Municipal Grant, which is an important step forward that reflects years of collaboration with the Government of Yukon. The built-in index is helping funding keep pace with inflation and rising costs, which is critical for municipalities facing growing pressures, including higher energy and operating expenses. We value this strong partnership and the progress made, while recognizing that municipalities are still managing tight financial realities. This funding is essential, and there is more work ahead to ensure it continues to meet the needs of Yukon communities.
President of the Association of Yukon Communities Lauren Hanchar
