Graduation milestone for record number of indigenous students in Thornbury

A CEREMONY to celebrate a record number of Koori students successfully completing year 12 was held in Thornbury on Friday.

Actor Aaron Pedersen congratulated the students — many of whom attended the ceremony at the Aborigines Advancement League — telling them when he completed Year 12 in the late 1980s few Aboriginal people finished high school.

Last year 384 Koori students graduated from 319 government schools, 28 Catholic schools and 37 independent schools.

The percentage of Aboriginal young people who entered university from Year 12 increased from 22 per cent in 2008 to 40 per cent in 2013.
