Green Island Spill Response Update

Press Release

October 21, 2025

After testing and collaboration with First Nations Health Authority, the recommended closure area is now being adjusted.

Following the diesel spill, Lax Kw’alaams recommended a no-harvest zone in the affected vicinity and drift site for seaweed products, bivalves, cockles, and bird eggs. After several months of testing and collaboration with FNHA, the recommended closure area is now being adjusted to reopen some previously restricted no-harvest areas.

However, the Green Island site continues to show signs of contamination in food sources and elevated levels of diesel fuel from the spill’s drift. Therefore, these specific areas are still recommended to remain closed for bivalve and cockle harvesting at this time. Long-term monitoring is ongoing at these contaminated sites, and they will remain closed until the food sources are deemed safe for consumption.

Please review the map to identify areas where bivalve and cockle harvesting may still be negatively impacted by the spill.
