Honour Indigenous History Month through learning – Belleville Intelligencer

May 27, 2026

The First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples of Canada have long rich traditions of storytelling that share knowledge and preserve history, culture, and language across generations. As noted in the First Peoples Principals of Learning, “learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors…. learning is embedded in memory, history, and story.” In honour of National Indigenous History Month this June, Belleville Public Library invites you to explore and celebrate the stories, achievements, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

On Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m., come to the 3rd floor of the library to see Mohawk artist and designer, Narda Julg, who will be showing examples of her creations that have gone out across North America. In Narda’s words, “One does not expect to be taught anything artistic at a very young age, but for some reason my mother, who was a survivor of residential school, decided I should learn perspective while I was still in “long gown”. Having the guidance of two Mohawk Elders who taught me beading and leather work, …I’ve worked solely in fabric and leathers for Indigenous People all over North America and Europe.” Come and enjoy learning the true meaning behind the Regalia worn by Indigenous Peoples through Narda’s amazing creations.
