Thunder Bay, ON – May 5, 2026 – Today, Hydro One Inc. (Hydro One), together with Electricity Canada and Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC) at Seventh Fire Junior High School in Thunder Bay, announced a new five‑year partnership to support the Ontario expansion of Electricity Now, an electricity and climate change education program for Grade 9 and Grade 10 students.
The expansion comes as Ontario’s electricity system prepares for historic growth in demand for electricity, driven by electrification, population growth and economic development. EHRC estimates close to 28,000 new employees will be needed in Canada’s electricity sector by 2028.
Hydro One will invest $325,000 annually to support Electricity Now’s expansion to more than 500 high schools across 67 school boards, with the goal of reaching up to one million students. This partnership will support electricity education, educator training and long‑term workforce development across Ontario. Ontario’s electricity sector is expected to require approximately 28,000 additional skilled workers in the coming decades to meet this growing demand.
“Ontario’s growing electricity needs require a strong, future ready workforce,” said Deborah Antenore, Vice President, People Strategies and Human Resources Initiatives at Hydro One. “Through Electricity Now, we are cultivating early interest, building energy literacy and showing young people that the electricity sector is innovative, essential and full of opportunity. Strong early response to the program shows that hands on, engaging learning can inspire the next generation to see a future for themselves in this industry.”
Electricity Now addresses complex energy concepts while introducing students to career profiles and opportunities in the electricity sector. The program includes interactive modules on electricity generation, safety and sustainability, and connects students with local Hydro One crews who share real world experience and pathways into in‑demand jobs that support their local communities.
It also supports Indigenous participation and inclusion by expanding access to electricity education and career pathways.
“With electricity demand set to increase substantially over the next 25 years, electricity is foundational to Canada’s future, and it’s critical that students see its impact in their everyday lives,” said Francis Bradley, President and CEO, Electricity Canada. “Hydro One’s investment in Electricity Now is helping bring electricity learning into classrooms across Ontario and reinforcing the essential role electricity plays in building the future of our country.”
“The workforce challenge is a timing challenge—we can’t wait until graduation to start the conversation,” said Michelle Branigan, CEO, EHRC. “Reaching students earlier helps build awareness and skills so they can connect classroom learning to real careers. Electricity Now brings that conversation into Grade 9 and 10 classrooms, and Hydro One’s support will help more students see a future for themselves in the electricity sector.”
Electricity Now is a national, bilingual electricity and climate change education resource developed by Electricity Canada and EHRC, with educational content created by CGC Educational Communications and delivered through participating electricity utilities.
Launched nationally in November 2024 following two years of development and pilot testing, the digital, classroom‑ready program is designed to reach up to nine million youth across Canada by 2050. More information is available at www.electricitynow.ca.
