The Ontario government has designated Hydro One to build and develop the 162-kilometre, double-circuit 230-kV Red Lake Transmission Line after naming it a priority project.
The transmission line connects through Dryden, Ear Falls, and Red Lake, Ont. to provide critical power transmission for mining and other major investments across Northern Ontario.
The province shared that between now and 2050, electricity demand is set to increase potentially as high as 525 per cent in the Red Lake region due to 41 potential mining projects in the area such as Kinross Gold’s Great Bear project and Frontier Lithium’s PAK Lithium project; with these projects driving demand from its current figure of 120 megawatts to a potential 750 megawatts over this time period.
