Press Release
On April 1, 2024, we proudly celebrated a major milestone—our 25th Anniversary. As part of this exciting chapter in our journey to advance Indigenous sport and recreation across the Northwest Territories, we unveiled a refreshed name and visual identity: the Indigenous Sports Circle NWT (ISCNWT). This change represents a purposeful move toward inclusivity and a renewed commitment to supporting the rich diversity of Indigenous communities throughout the Territory.
While our new name and logo symbolize growth, it is the impact of our work on the ground that truly defines our success. Over the past year, we have delivered a wide range of programming, signature events, and leadership development initiatives that reached residents in 27 communities across the NWT. From promoting traditional activities like Northern Games, Dene Games and Archery through demonstrations, athlete training, and instructor development, to investing in community leadership through programs like the Aboriginal Coaching Modules, the Indigenous Coach Development Program, and the Indigenous Long-Term Participant Development workshops—our efforts continue to grow in both reach and relevance.
We were also proud to relaunch our Community Development Grant program, specifically designed to support meaningful sport, recreation, and cultural initiatives at the local level. Through this program, we distributed $174,096 to 26 communities, helping to ensure that these important activities continue to thrive.
This past year also marked the completion of our current five-year strategic plan. It has been a journey filled with success, challenges, and invaluable lessons. Over the last eight months, we have been hard at work developing our new strategic plan, rooted in community voices. Through focus groups and surveys, individuals from across the NWT shared their hopes, priorities, and visions for the future. We’re excited to launch this community-driven roadmap by the end of summer 2025.
None of these accomplishments would be possible without the incredible dedication of our staff, volunteers, coaches, instructors, and corporate partners. Your unwavering support fuels our mission to elevate Indigenous sport, celebrate cultural heritage, and build strong, healthy, and active communities throughout the Northwest Territories.
