Joint statement from Premier Pillai, Minister Mostyn and MLA for Mount-Lorne Southern Lakes on Tagish Community Centre

Premier and Minister of Economic Development Ranj Pillai, Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn and Member of the Yukon Legislative Assembly for Mount-Lorne Southern Lakes John Streicker have issued the following statement:

“Early on the morning of March 12, we received word that a fire had broken out at the Tagish Community Centre. While we are still learning more about the situation, we want to acknowledge this devastating loss to the community and express our gratitude to the firefighters who responded quickly to the scene. Their swift action helped prevent further damage and we deeply appreciate their dedication to keeping the community safe.

“We know how much the Tagish Community Centre meant to residents – a place to gather, connect and support one another. From community dinners to pancake breakfasts, from fitness classes and youth programs, the centre was at the heart of life in Tagish. It was a space where friends met for coffee, families celebrated milestones and neighbours came together to support one another in times of need.

“The recent fire that destroyed this important space is a heartbreaking loss for the community and our thoughts are with everyone affected.

“We want the people of Tagish to know that when the community is ready, our government is committed to rebuilding a new community space that meets local needs. In the coming days, we will be reaching out to listen, understand priorities and work together to create a space that reflects the vision of the community.

“We stand with Tagish during this difficult time and we will be there to support the community as it moves forward.”
