Justin Trudeau is the first Canadian Prime Minister to commit to a nation-to-nation relationship with indigenous people, says Justice Murray Sinclair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
While it is still too early to say what the promise will mean for Canada, the early signs are positive, Sinclair said in an interview this week in Saskatoon.
“Everything at the end of the day will depend upon results,” he said.
The new Liberal government has promised to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Trudeau has told his ministers that, “no relationship is more important to me and to Canada than the one with indigenous peoples.”
