Kwikwetlem First Nation Statement: No Interest in Private Homes or Residential Lands

Kwikwetlem First Nation would like to reassure all residents of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam that our title claim — filed in February 2016 — does not name or include any privately owned or private residential properties.

There are no residential neighbourhoods or private properties included or impacted by our title claim.

Kwikwetlem First Nation urges residents not to draw inferences from the recent Cowichan decision when it comes to Kwikwetlem’s goals and interests. The concerns about residential areas from the Cowichan decision simply are not present here.

In regard to the title claim, it’s currently on hold as the Nation negotiates a deal with multiple parties.

Our goal, as it has always been, is to work in a spirit of reconciliation to support a better future for our people and to contribute to the prosperity of our entire region without impacting residential areas or privately owned lands.
