Legal assistance for victims of intimate partner violence

Press Release

November 21, 2025

If you have experienced intimate partner violence, you are not alone, and support is available.

The Independent Legal Advice and Independent Legal Representation (ILA-ILR) Program offers free, confidential legal advice and representation to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Through the program, lawyers are available to help survivors understand their rights and options and to provide representation in court.

Intimate partner violence is not limited to physical abuse, and may include emotional abuse, coercive control, financial abuse, and/or sexual violence. It can happen regardless of gender, at any time during a relationship, whether partners live together or not.

The ILA-ILR program is made possible through funding by Justice Canada, as part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to advance the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence.

To apply, please contact the victim services division at victimservices@gov.nu.ca or toll-free at 1-866-456-5216. For more information, visit the Government of Nunavut website.
