Mergers, acquisitions (M&A) and strategic partnerships are increasingly being recognized as a powerful mechanism for advancing economic reconciliation in Canada, offering Indigenous nations and enterprises a path to secure meaningful equity ownership, drive growth and exercise greater self-determination over their economic futures.
For decades, one of the primary roadblocks preventing Indigenous nations from acquiring significant equity stakes in major projects affecting their territories has been a lack of access to affordable capital, says Zach Romano, a partner in the Vancouver office of the Fasken law firm who advises on major projects and transactions involving Indigenous equity participation.
