The Manitoba government is investing $57,000 through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program to support renovations and enhancements at Camp Nanuq, improving a variety of exciting and enriching programs for youth and elders, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“Investing in Camp Nanuq means investing in the strength and spirit of Churchill,” said Simard. “This support helps create safe, welcoming spaces where young people and elders can come together, learn from one another and celebrate the rich Indigenous cultures that define the region. When communities have the tools to honour their traditions and support their youth, everyone benefits. Our government is proud to stand with Churchill as it builds opportunities rooted in culture, connection and belonging.”
Camp Nanuq is an all-ages camp that celebrates and preserves the culture, heritage and community spirit of Churchill, while promoting inclusivity and respect. Programming includes character-building activities such as outdoor adventures, camping, games and community service, fostering growth and intergenerational connections.
“We deeply appreciate the Manitoba government’s leadership and its investment in strengthening our community,” said Louise Lawrie, chair, Camp Nanuq. “This investment ensures Camp Nanuq remains a place where youth, elders and families come together to learn, heal and celebrate the rich cultures that make Churchill so special, grounded in the land and the three intersecting biomes that shape our way of life. By expanding opportunities rooted in tradition, connection and respect, we are helping young people grow into confident, capable leaders who will carry our community’s spirit forward.”
Located on the traditional lands of the Dene, Cree, Inuit and Métis peoples, Camp Nanuq emphasizes the healing power of the natural environment, supports mental well-being and helps young people develop the skills and confidence needed for future success.
From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL is a Manitoba government initiative providing more than $12 million in 2025-26 to support local projects. The program funds non-profits, municipalities and community councils for community renewal, spaces and youth initiatives. Grants up to $100,000 for projects aim to improve safety, social inclusion and infrastructure.
