More Than $2 Million Earmarked for Collaborative Public Safety Partnerships: Premier, Wiebe

The Manitoba government is investing approximately $2.2 million to support five business organizations that will help improve safety this summer in downtown Winnipeg, Premier Wab Kinew and Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today.

“Downtown Winnipeg is the vibrant heart of our community, and these investments are about bringing people, fun and life back to our downtown for another incredible summer,” said Kinew. “By partnering with these organizations, we’re investing in grassroots, community-based safety initiatives that are led by the community, for the community.”

To improve safety in Winnipeg’s downtown and surrounding areas, the Manitoba government is providing funding to the following organizations:

  • $750,000 to the Downtown Community Safety Partnership Inc. (DCSP);
  • $750,000 to the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone (BIZ);
  • $300,000 to the West End BIZ;
  • $250,000 to the Exchange District BIZ; and
  • $150,000 to the West Broadway BIZ.

Business improvement zones are non-profit organizations with a mandate to enhance economic development by creating positive environments for local businesses and the communities they serve. Each BIZ offers a variety of unique programs and services to help build healthy and vibrant neighbourhoods.

“Whether it’s going to work or enjoying everything downtown Winnipeg has to offer, Manitobans should feel safe,” said Wiebe. “Our government is committed to making sure that Manitobans can feel safe when they enjoy our beautiful province, and one way we’re going to do that is by working directly with communities to support unique safety needs.”

These funds will be used to build and enhance community partnerships that protect public safety with a focus on de-escalation and wellness. Funding can also be used for security upgrades to the organizations’ offices including cameras, alarm systems, anti-graffiti coatings, security fencing and repairs to damage from vandalism or property crime.

“Downtown safety depends on strong partnerships, shared responsibility and a willingness to work together on practical solutions,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, City of Winnipeg. “When the Manitoba government, the City of Winnipeg, the business community and trusted community organizations align their efforts, we can make a real difference. This kind of partnership helps make downtown safer and more welcoming for residents, workers, businesses and visitors, while also helping vulnerable people connect with the support they need.”

The Community Safety WAYFINDERS program, a partnership between the DCSP, Indigenous-led organizations and community outreach teams, will receive $500,000 in provincial funding through the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, along with an additional $100,000 from the City of Winnipeg and $50,000 from the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. The program focuses on increasing visible presence, community outreach, de-escalation and culturally grounded support through proactive engagement, relationship building, navigation to services and early intervention.

“The Downtown BIZ is proud to partner with the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg to support the Community Safety WAYFINDERS program, which is proven and effective model for improving safety and reducing pressure on emergency services,” said Kate Fenske, CEO, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “Real progress requires co-ordinated action, shared responsibility and partners that are willing to work differently together. A thriving downtown depends on people feeling safe, connected and confident being here. I truly believe today’s investment will make a meaningful difference.”

These investments are part of the Manitoba government’s broader effort to enhance safety for municipalities, businesses and community organizations across the province, guided by the Safer Neighbourhoods, Safer Downtowns Public Safety Strategy.
