Matriarchs Uprising returns with dance that centres Indigenous women – The Georgia Straight

The Matriarchs Uprising Festival returns this month with a week-long celebration of contemporary dance by Indigenous women from Canada and Australia.

Running from February 16 to 21, the eighth annual festival unfolds across the Scotiabank Dance Centre and Morrow, alongside virtual programming with IndigiDance. The festival blends live performance with artist-led conversations, workshops and film.

The 2026 program opens with the Western Canada premiere of Wahsipekuk: Au-delà des montagnes by Wolastoq and Quebecois artist Ivanie Aubin-Malo, presented in partnership with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival. Across the week, audiences can experience solos, duets and double bills exploring themes of land, healing and intergenerational knowledge.
