OTTAWA, Ontario—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser will participate in a ceremonial tree dedication on the grounds of Rideau Hall to commemorate the end of the Governor General’s mandate. Rideau Hall staff will be present to witness the dedication ceremony.
Their Excellencies will each turn a spade-full of earth at the base of a black spruce (Picea mariana), a coniferous tree native to Canada’s boreal forest, part of which grows in the Governor General’s home region of Nunavik. Over 150 commemorative trees grace the grounds of Rideau Hall, the official residence of the governor general of Canada. They mark visits by members of the Royal family, heads of State and dignitaries, and the mandates of past governors general.
