Media Advisory – May 13 14: Hundreds to take action against Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion

May 10, 2016 (Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories, BC) —On May 14th Canadawill join a global wave of actions across six continents in countries such as the UK, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, Nigeria and the US pushing for increased action to curtail a growing climate crisis.
May 14th action will see hundreds ofpeople swarming Kinder Morgan’s Westridge terminal by water and land. The peaceful direct action will include a kayak flotilla that will surround the terminal by water, and a mass march and sitin surrounding it on land. Greenpeace Canada and 350.org will be giving a training in nonviolent civil disobedience on the 13th, in Cates Park, for those planning to attend
WHY: The action will take place in advance of the National Energy Board’s May 20 submission of its final recommendation on the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline, at which point the federal government will start its review of the project.Communities across British Columbia will use this action to send a message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada must break free from fossil fuels, listen to the science and transition to a 100% renewable energy.
WHAT: Training in nonviolent civil disobedience, mass action, march, civil disobedience sitin on land, and kayak flotilla surrounding the oin the water, swarming enclosing Kinder Morgan terminal on the water.
WHEN & WHERE:
May 13th — Public Trainings for Sitin and Kayak Flotilla
- Time: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
- Location: Cates Park (also known as WheyahWichen), North Vancouver
May 14th — Mass action at Kinder Morgan
- Time: 11 AM
- Location: Westridge Park, Burnaby for land action, Cates Park (also known as WheyahWichen) for water action. Media stands in Westridge Park and Cates Park. A few media boats will also be available in Cates Park (though space is limited).
